Illustration Friday - Simple

What could be more simple than a hug and a kiss? Sometimes that's all it takes to make everything better - from a scraped knee to a broken heart. In fact, research shows that affectionate contact with a romantic partner in the form of hand holding and hugging greatly reduces the effects of stress. In a 2003 study, researchers found that couples who spent ten minutes holding hands followed by a twenty second hug not only had lower heartbeats during subsequent stressful situations, but also had lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol and higher levels of serotonin and dopamine, neurotransmitters associated with pleasurable sensations.

In honor of St. Valentine's Day, I offer you some photoshopped Hugs and Kisses with nods to Robert Indiana and Andy Warhol.

Nicely done, Carla. I like that you've linked Valentine's Day to IF this week. Ingeniously, too. I can see this as a huge painting in a high-end 'white wall' gallery, nothing around it. Run out and buy that huge canvas now, y'hear?

Thank you, that is beautiful and true. Have seen the movie "What the "Bleep Do We Know!?" Probably so, if not check it out. Your art, what I've seen so far is great. I have not yet entered into the blogesphere with mine.

Peace & Well Wishes,

touching also increases insulin levels in newborns, aiding in cell nourishment. (babies and children who are seldom held or hugged, often suffer from nutrition deficits even when they're on an adequate diet.)

Lovely structure and thoughts, but I might've missed the XO theme if I hadn't read your thoughts - I kind of read it as "OY" :). The colours do grind up against each other a bit - not altogether pleasantly (I feel stressed!), but this is definitely simple and striking!

Liz - I have no idea what filter I used. This is from a type project I did years ago in a photoshop class. The orginal piece is the XO in the top left corner. And Ian, I'm glad you felt stressed when you saw it, because the challenge was to use type to create a piece called "Tension." I was actually being a bit ironic at the time using the XO idea along with the color and textre treatment. Anyway, I took this week's topic very literally...I decided to make things simple for myself and pull out something I'd already done, make a few changes, and reinvent its meaning.
