Illustration Friday - Tattoo

Tattoo

Tattoo tattoo
Some things fade some never do
Like the names of me and you
In my skin indigo blue
Tattoo tattoo
Waving boys in navy blue
Whalers sailing home to you
Scratched in scrimshaw tusk and tooth
Tattoo tattoo
Some things fade some never do
These lines of love to you
Tattoo tattoo
The verse of life is blank I think
We fill in in invisible ink
It comes to sight, it surfaces
When held up to the light of love
Tattoo tattoo
Carney girls in summer suits
Local boys in leather boots
Diagrams of derring-do
Tattoo tattoo
Tattoo tattoo
Some things fade some never do
Like these lines of love to you
Tattoo tattoo
Like the names of me and you
In my skin indigo blue
Tattoo tattoo

Do you sketch it in pencil first? My goodness, the details. I wouldn't have the patience for the details but I'm glad you do because it's like your signature.

Intricately elaborate but not too over the top, this is why I like most of your pieces, and I really like this one. Especially the details from her lower back. How long did it take you to design this? I have been to a tattoo parlor with my friends too many times, and I never come out with one. I cannot decide what to have. It's just too big of a pressure for me, knowing that it will stay on me forever. So, given the choice I can't have one, if I can never make up my mind.

Wow, Carla--This is stunning. I just spent the last five minutes staring at the full-sized (zoomed-in) image. The details are so intricate. The shape of the design falls beautifully against the curves of her body. Fantastic work.

12:15 PM
Blogger Leeza Hernandez Illustrator said...

Carla, it's gorgeous. I love how the tattos follows the contours of her body, they really look part of her skin. Beautiful detail, too. How long did it take to work on this piece? And what is the finished size. I am curious as to how big - or small - your are comfortable working.

PS: The black and white are perfectly suited to this piece, allowing the subtle background throw the subject forawrd. it really pops. Bravo!

Beautiful in its intricacy and design-where have you heard that before, I guess I am repeating what others have said, anyway, it's also fascinating, any square inch of the design could be a fine tattoo in it's own right.

OOooo Carla! Sexy! Very cool piece. Tattoos should be works of art. Some I've seen clearly are not, but they all should be. This design of yours really shows how tattoos should be worn as well as how they should become part of who you are! Beautiful job!!

What really makes this work so well is the contrast between textured and plain areas. As always, you have fantastic technique when texturing - the variety is amazing. None of this would matter if the composition itself wasn't also strong - I love where you've chosen to cut it at the top and the bottom - really nicely framed. Excellent!

Wow Carla, this is just beautiful, your attention to detail is remarkable. I have to agree the way you "styled" her hair works so well with the entire design. If I was a braver woman, I would love the elbow tat.

Great illustration... beautiful, sensual.

Thanks for dropping by my blog and commenting. Didn't mean to come off so negative... The topic just didn't inspire me this week. I have friends and relatives with art on their parts. As in other matters, I'm pro-choice: It's just that I choose not to have tattoos put on my body. But I support the right of others to choose to do so.
