Illustration Friday - Change

self-portrait, circa 1976

Everything comes and goes
Marked by lovers and styles of clothes
Things that you held high
And told yourself were true
Lost or changing as the days come down to you...

- Joni Mitchell

Changed since 1976: older, wiser, don't smoke (the delusion that it looked artsy and cool didn't last very long), self-supporting

Same as 1976: hairstyle, weight, head full of questions, tendency to daydream

This is, of course, the abridged version.

Hi Carla,

Love your self portrait. Oh how true the quote from Joni Mitchell about change. Back in 1976 I couldn't have imagined the changes that would take place. I'd do a self portrait too, but no one would be interested... ;>)

I love your self-analysis, honest but there seems to be a positive touch:-).

I wish I would have kept some of my art from "the old days." It just seems so cool to go back and revisit how you felt about yourself and the world, expressed through the art you created at that time.

I love this drawing and the fact that you made it in 1976! Even with all the question marks, there's a sense of calm and order in the room around you. I also really like your new header--very soft and pretty.

Love the black and white line drawing here Carla. The way you have yourself sitting, almost looking contemplative is so well done. It's great to see the different styles you can work in too!

Carla, this is priceless. It's so cool that you found this and used it for this week's challenge. I'm not sure a new piece of art would have been any more appropriate! Laughing about the 70s hair ~ it's been in style since except for the big hair 80s, of course!

I like this funky sketch, although I have to disagree about the hair. Clearly you parted your hair in the middle in '76, and now you part it on the side. Nice to see this loose sketch from you.

It's great to look back through our past art pieces and reflect on the passing time, isn't it? Don't get me started... I'll get all melancholy...
Anyway, I see a very thoughtful (and deep-thinking) person there.

Thanks for the tip on the book - ordered it today! Sounds like we are both in the same boat - school is eatin' into our fun time! I hate not being able to post and check in with others more frequently. Time just seems to get away from me! Best of luck to both of us in letting go in our paintings! Will keep checkin in with you to see how you are doing! This next project for me is another tight realism piece - as assigned by said instructor - but after that he says we should get to some projects that will allow a more loose style! Cant wait!

A fine, honest self-portrait, but what I'd really like to see is a series of these through time, as a reflection of the subject and the way she views herself, and the drawing style also - a bit like Rembrandt did. Of course, I should've done this myself.

This is a nice linear piece with just enough stylisation and looking back on it really must bring home "Change" to you very clearly. I don't think think it has dated much though - still a fine portrait.

I don't know if someone already asked you this, but did you actually draw that back in the day too? Or did you draw this recently.

I love it. My favourite part is the lamp. I don't quite know why, but i really like what it adds to the picture.
