Illustration Friday - Sprout
February: Thinking of Flowers
Now wind torments the field,
turning the white surface back
on itself, back and back on itself,
like an animal licking a wound.
Nothing but white--the air, the light;
only one brown milkweed pod
bobbing in the gully, smallest
brown boat on the immense tide.
A single green sprouting thing
would restore me. . . .
Then think of the tall delphinium,
swaying, or the bee when it comes
to the tongue of the burgundy lily.
- Jane Kenyon (1947 - 1995)
mixed media painting on 10" x 10" x 1.5" canvas - one of two paintings going into a show called "Altered Egos." You can see the other painting here.

Not sure yet which I like better. I do love the layering and textural elements -- particularly the way you collaged sheet music in. So good to see you keeping at it, Carla!
Wonderful portrait. I like her seductive look and the musical notes in the background are just great.
Way to go Carla! You really topped yourself with this one. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful! You're always exploring new techniques. Your head must be ready to explode (in a good, creative way, of course!)
Love this piece! Very come hither.
This is beautiful Carla!
Hey- Have you been "Tagged" on Illustration Friday? Well- I was, and I am on a "Tagging" spree now, so I tag you...(it seems pretty easy- you must visit my blog to get the rules-very simple- but I am moving slowly so if you get there and find nothing please try back) JRY
Beautiful painting Carla! I was thinking about you as I was looking up quotes that had the word "sprout." I thought, "Carla will have one!!" Good job. I love your stuff.

Beautiful work- as always. I'm curious- what song is the sheet music from?
nicely done! great work, carla!
WOW!! I absolutely love the new direction your art is taking. The portrait below is amazing as well - and your inclusion of collage elements is done in a unique way. The faces on both women look like photographs! What a great show you'll have. Wish I could go!
Exceptionally beautiful, Carla. And while I am here I wanted to add that portrait below is so eyecatching I had a hard time saying goodbye to your blog today.
Beautiful work! I know you said you aren't finished, so please show it again when it is done.

love the collage elements of this piece, Carla
Yes, really love this one! I love your portraits.
This is really terrific! Love the collage effect.
lovely work carla and beautiful words add so much...
Lovely face and form, and the arm and hand are intrigueing, their texture and form seem aggetated and groping, in contrast to the gentle aura of this painting.
To me this piece is a pretty mystery, even though the words explain so much, so well.
Very lovely and knockout color use...I really like the way the cool and warm colors play off of the face...
Beautiful. I just love the colors and texture.
Your work leaves me speechless ~ so beautiful and intriguing. The layers on Sprout are almost translucent and have such dreamy look, is she holding a bird?? She has a look about her thats says shes really pleased with herself I wonder what has she done, is she about to let the bird go and fly away, has she just met her lover??? Now my mind is working overtime ~ hugs to you xx Jude xx
Fabulous texture and great expression.
This is brathtaking! Absolutely wonderful!
What a beautiful lady! Nice to see you back Carla!!!
Such intiquing textures and compeling expression! Really draws you in! Lovely!
I was inspired to do a self portrait after reading about Frida Kahlo yesterday. I am even more inspired after seeing this piece. This is beautiful!
i love how the music softly swirls around and the way her hand rest on her belly. mysterious and beautifully feminine
Such beautiful dark eyes! I love how you've layered the music in. This piece has an intense but simultaneously serene feel. Great work.
i love the colors here, especially the green! and the partitas are brilliant.
Hi Carla,
Feels like I have not visited in a while. This is so lovely. It has a Klimt feel to it. Very soft and magical. Cheers!
This is beautiful. I love the mood and the colors.

She reminds me of Ann-Margret... her eyes, maybe? Intriguing and enchanting.
